Battle Of The French BB Creams : Erborian VS Embryolisse

Introduction

Today i will be reviewing two French BB Creams : the Embryolisse and the Erborian BB Creams.  The Erborian BB Cream was the 1st ever French BB Cream that has been loved by the French beauty community since it’s release last year. It was so popular that they released another shade later on last year. Erborian is a Korean-French skincare company that is sold in Sephora, and the BB Cream is made in Korea, not France. The Embryolisse BB Cream was just launched a few days ago and it has been creating a buzz online due to it’s shade fitting all types of skin colour ( even African skin tones! ). Embryolisse is known world wide for it’s Lait Creme Concentre which is also known as the 24-Hour Miracle Cream.

  • Erborian Ginseng BB Cream

French-South Korean skin care brand Erborian, BB Creme au Ginseng, a 3-in-1 formulation that combines moisturizer, sun protection and foundation has arrived in Australia for the very first time.
Utilising the true secret of Oriental beauty, Korean Red Ginseng, a natural element known for its regenerating and energizing properties, BB Creme gives skin a soft, flawless no makeup look that is toned throughout the day.

Its signature ingredient is cultivated for six years to become a beauty treasure with a market price similar to gold, working meticulously to detoxify and boost microcirculation, making skin firmer, denser and more radiant.

Transformed by the warmth of the skin, the ultra-light new generation formula’s chameleon colouring adapts to the skin’s natural tone, giving the perfect coverage, while nourishing with antioxidants and minerals and protecting skin from the sun with an SPF 25+.

BB cream is designed to give you a very natural, “no makeup look”

– Provides perfect coverage better then foundation, its noncomedogenic.
– Works like a tinted moisturiser with more skin healing benefits, including an SPF.
– Conceals all types of pigmentation, discoloration, acne and other blemishes.
– Has healing properties that soften, smooth and refine skin like Ginseng.
– Ginseng also encourages skin regeneration maintaining firm and youthful skin.

Erborian’s BB Cream “Light” is for fair skin – think Nicole Kidman to Gwyenth Paltrow

To use: Apply in thin layer after or without your daily moisturizer. Excellent make-up base, last for 12 hours.

  • Embryolisse BB Cream

Part skincare, part make-up, one sweep of this nude to coloured gel-cream illuminates and evens out your complexion, moisturises and protects your skin and leaves it smooth and silky soft.

  • Complexion embellishment: the combined action of 3 elements transforms the skin: a fruit acid (citric acid) gently boosts the elimination of dead skin cells to lighten your complexion, matifying mineral powder pearls absorb excess sebum whilst reflecting light for a glowing, soft-focus effect finish and colour-changing pigments blend into your skin tone to subtly colour your complexion.

Pores and fine lines are blurred, as if veiled, your complexion is evened out and imperfections are concealed, skin texture is smooth and velvety.

A stunning effect that brings an incredible translucent radiance to your face for a natural, healthy complexion and baby soft feel.

  • Potent moisturiser: its moisturising complex with hyaluronic acid plumps up the skin instantly and durably; supple and firmer, it is visibly smooth and silky.
  • Anti-age protection: your skin is protected from free radicals thanks to anti-oxidising vitamin E, and from UVA and UVB rays thanks to mineral sunscreens and filters.

This delightfully cool tinted gel-cream really stays on and can be used in several ways: as a treatment after cleansing like a classic moisturiser, as a tinted cream after your day cream, as a make-up base under full-coverage foundation, applied all over the face or just in places that need to be evened out (it is an excellent dark circle concealer), or for a touch of radiance. It is the ideal treatment to take along for touch-ups, and its universal shade is adapted to all skin tones.

I’m never a fan of Embryolisse’s packaging and this is no exception. The only plus is that it’s compact and easy to bring around. It’s small, slim and compact – perfect to fit even in your pockets when you go out. The Erborian BB Cream however comes in a much bigger thicker tube ( it contains 45ml compared to the 30ml of the Embroylisse ) but looks much more attractive than the Embryolisse.

No trouble controlling the amount of BB Cream that comes out with both BB Creams which is a big plus!

Shade

Pictures taken under all sorts of condition : natural sunlight, under flash, under yellow light to give you the best possible idea of it’s shade / colour.

As you can see, the Erborian BB Cream has a greyish pinkish undertone to it – and it will leave a slight greyish pinkish cast after applying it, but nothing too noticeable after a few minutes as it adjusts to your skin colour. It doesn’t leave much of a white-cast when taking flash with photos too but compared to the Embryolisse BB Cream, it will look whiter on your skin.

Like i mentioned above, the Embrolisse BB Cream is suited to ANY skin tone or colours. Really? You may find it hard to believe, but i think it really does. Eventhough the BB Cream has a slight dark orange shade to it, after blending, it does initially leave an orange cast on your skin, but after more blending and time – it looks natural on your skin and makes it look more brighter and radiant ! No white cast or orange cast !

Texture

Photo above is to give you an insight of it’s texture. Spread both BB Creams with my fingers to see how ‘far’ it could go. The one with the lighter texture will of course travel longer. Also the photos will show you how pigmented the BB Creams are.  On first look the Erborian BB Cream has a thick balmy concentrated texture like what BB Creams should be ( if not, why called it a Blemish BALM instead of a tinted moisturizer? ) but once spread on the skin, it is actually rather light and spreads really easily on the skin. You would definitely need to use your hands to blend this BB Cream, as the heat of your hands helps blend the BB Cream effortlessly into your skin. The oil content in this BB Cream also helps make the BB Cream easily spreadable on the skin. The BB Cream gives a matte finish.

The Embryolisse BB Cream has the typical thick concentrated balmy texture of a BB Cream like the original BB Cream : the Dr. Schrammek BB Cream. It is definitely harder to blend on the skin, and when blending it, the ‘tinted’ part of the BB Cream spreads unevenly, therefore you will definitely need to put in extra effort to blend it into the skin until everything is even. But once blended in, it is worth all the effort and time! You’d definitely need to use your hands for this too. It leaves a powdery matte finish which those with oily and combination would love, but those with dry skin will find this a little too drying.

Coverage

Coverage is very very sheer on the Embryolisse BB Cream, so if you’re looking for something to cover your blemishes, acne, etc – this isn’t for you. However if you have perfect skin, and would like to give you that healthy bright radiant tone – this is perfect for you. I find that this is more of a ‘primer’ or a ‘makeup base’ as it does help help reduce the appearance of your pores – i usually use this BB Cream as my primer – then add another layer of BB Cream on top of it. It is an excellent primer or makeup base as it helps cover up the pores, and the BB Cream will help camouflage it. Try putting this on your dark circles before putting on your concealer! It does help brighten dark circles.

The coverage for the Erborian is better than the Embryolisse BB Cream, but nothing compared to the other BB Creams out there. I would say around light to medium coverage. It also does help cover pores excellently and cover blemishes lightly and looks very natural on the skin ( remember to leave it on for a few minutes! ). Be careful while applying the Erborian because it can give you a pale grey white cast if you apply too much of it.

Oil Test

The results were unexpected, the Embryolisse  BB Cream contains more oil compared to the Embryolisse. I thought that the Erborian BB Cream would have more oil content because of the BB Cream’s balmy texture, but both BB Creams actually have above average oil control and gives a matte finish ( the Embryolisse has a matte AND powdery finish ). The oil control for Embryolisse is even better , but both of them have above average oil controlling properties.

Water Test

Battle Of The French BB Creams : Erborian VS Embryolisse

Both BB Creams have really good adherence on the skin especially the Erborian BB Cream. I applied both BB Creams on the back of my hands, washed it with water, and then wiped it with tissue. The Erborian BB Cream did not leave any tinted trace on the tissue at all which is rare. Therefore no worries about wiping your face when you’re dripping with sweat. The Embryolisse BB Cream also didn’t leave much trace !

In the other test, i placed both BB Creams on plastic paper and then washed them vigorously with warm water, cold water, and hot water to test it’s adherence.

How would they react with water? The Embryolisse BB Cream floated on water when it was squeezed out while the Erborian BB Cream fell to the bottom of the cup right away. After stirring with a chopstick vigorously, the water was still clear and did not turn murky at all. This shows that both BB Creams will not dissolve in water, and that the Embryolisse BB Cream is more water-proof

Oxidation Test

As you can see, after about 7 hours, the Embryolisse oxidized quite a lot! The colour difference is huge! The Erborian fared much better, with little colour change!

Ingredient List

Battle Of The French BB Creams : Erborian VS EmbryolisseBattle Of The French BB Creams : Erborian VS Embryolisse

Although the Embryolisse BB Cream claims to be a ‘BB Cream’ – it actually contains hardly any beneficial extracts for the skin – the same problem when it comes to Western BB Creams. Just a quick glance at the BB Creams and you’d see all sorts of chemicals instead of extracts ( infact there isn’t even a single plant extract here ). The only beneficial skincare extract here you can find is

  • Vitamin E ( tocopherol ),
  • sodium acetyl hyaluronate ( obtained through partial substitution of hydroxyl groups of sodium hyaluronate (HA) by acetyl groups. The treatment let the sodium hyaluronate possess hydrophobicity in addition to the original hydrophilic nature. The new compound showed remarkably increased affinity to the skin surface and water holding capacity(“anchoring humectant”). The high water holding capacity and corneum softening effect brought by the “anchoring” effect are the advantages of sodium acetyl hyaluronate.
  • Sodium citrate – antioxidant and type of AHA which is used primarily to adjust the pH balance of cosmetic products.

The plus point for the Embryolisse although it is just loaded with silicones, minerals, and chemicals : it is alcohol free, talc free, phenoxyethanol free and paraben free.

The Erborian BB Cream definitely has the ingredient list of a truly Asian BB Cream ( it is made in South Korea ) which is loaded with plant extracts, and beneficial extracts for the skin like betaine, a few plant and herb extracts, trehalose, vitamin E, Ginseng, Wild Yam Root Extract, Licorice Extract etc. It is alcohol and paraben free, but not talc and phenoxyethanol free.

They are both also not fragrance free.

Both are excellent BB Creams – i would say that the Erborian is in all terms more of a BB Cream ( sunscreen, moisturizer, coverage, oil control, beneficial extracts for the skin ) than the Embryolisse which i think is more suitable as a make-up p
rimer or base. However, i do need to stress that both BB Creams are not hydrating enough alone, and would need the normal skincare routine. I recommend using the Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre before putting on the BB Creams as it really helps make it last longer and makes blending easier. The Embryolisse BB Cream would also probably feel a little drying due to it’s powdery finish.

The Erborian BB Cream can give a white cast if applied too much because of it’s grey pink undertone – while the Embryolisse can look a little too orangey if not blended properly but once blended properly it is very natural. Both BB Creams have average SPF considering that most of the BB Creams today are already above SPF 50. I do see the Embryolisse BB Cream doing well just because it can be used by everyone without having to worry about the shade chosen.

Both BB Creams are now available.

  1. Wow! My-my.. you did the most profound job here! Deepest respect! I was thinking about this Erborian bb for some time, but meanwhile tried others (eBay is still much easier than go couple of hours to the city which has Sephora and Dutch Sephora has no comfortable online service).. probably, still have to give it a try.

I seem to be one of the few persons, who will definately cry when “old-fashioned” bb-creams will be replaced with more natural tones, çause this slightly grayish-pink undertone fits me ideally, and I always had trouble to find matching make-up in standard European shades.

  2. ohui extreme gives me a bit too dramatic effect [extreme indeed ].. somehow, being close to my face color, it gives result like I got strong projector aiming into my face.. interesting for evening, but not usual day look. I’m more #21, then #13 qua tone – rather light, but not completely snow-white. And it is a bit too thick to my liking, I prefer softer textures, easier to blend. Thanks for Armani – I am only familiar with their normal make up, but they’re lovely, so, probably, bb should be good as well [although I think that meanwhile nothing beats East from price-quality point of view].

  3. but the armani BB is really sheer.. just evens out ur skin tone and gives it a soft glow but it doesnt cover much ( or at all )

  4. Thanks! Actually, I’m looking for quite light cover – may be, a bit blurring of blood vessels under eyes[skin is rather transparent], bit of evening of tone, bit of pore-smoothing.. From what I tried, Elisha Coy Golden Mineral, Missha Signature and Shills Sakura Blossom did the trick [can’t stop trying – there are SOOOOO many ]. Traditional make up, like Miracle Lancome or Nude Dior I only used in proportion 1:4 with my usual moisturizer. Love bb creams for their invisibility .
